EHLO Gnu/Linux, I’m back!
After about 5 months of separation from my preferred operating system, the discontent brought by Mac Os X led me to a re-born love with Gnu/Linux.
I Installed Gentoo (~x86, not x86) on my MacBook, following some articles found on the Gentoo wiki and on Ubuntu wiki.
The result is the following:
Some things opened: Gnome Menu, Gnome Terminal, Nautilus, Scite

Features:
- Gnome 2.22.2
- MurrinaGilouche + Elementary Metacity (link - link)
- black-white 2 Gloss Icons (link)
- Screenlets [RingSensors] (link)
- A wallpaper included in Gnome, still looking for the perfect one
Let’s have some fun with Gnu/Linux…again!

Just curious - what were your dissatisfactions with Mac OSX?
I used to use Gentoo myself.

I really like Mac OS X graphics, and I appreciate some innovative tools like Spotlight and its integration with Finder. What I totally dislike of Mac Os X is its heavy RAM-appetite. Using a Macbook Core 2 Duo @2.2 ghz, 1GB RAM you are not able to have both Eclipse and Firefox opened and use other system applications without facing slowdows. It always swaps. The same operations can be done under Gnu/Linux (no matter which Desktop Environment) with a half of the RAM. With 2Gb you really face a high jump in terms of performances, you feel like you upgraded your whole computer.

I don’t feel free as with Gnu/Linux, even if Mac Os X is more a Unix system than the Penguin
I don’t like Finder so much, even the need to hit cmd+n for opening a new window instead of simply clicking the icon on the dock.
I also dislike the size of programs under Mac Os X, because of the Universal Binary system.
I don’t like the lack of a true collection of development tools (why do I have to install xcode just for having gcc?)
I don’t like a couple of kernel services of Darwin, I find it too much permissive with some syscalls (fork() under Mac Os X really pisses me off) and process signals.
There are also lots of other things which I don’t like but I don’t have the time to focus on all of them
Anyway…I believe that Apple focuses too much on graphical innovations and to capture new users, while still misses some characteristics which I cosider basis. They really had the good idea to stop to scratch their heads and not focusing on new features for Snow Leopard.
Hope it was sufficient
